Weight Lifting Fitness Helps You Stay Healthy

August 29th, 2010 at 03:02am Under Weights and Fitness

weight-lifting-fitness

Many people believe that weight lifting fitness is only for building  huge, bulky muscles. If that’s what you are going for, that’s all good and fine. But did you know there is much more to weight lifting than meets the eye?

Such a seemingly simple exercise has far reaching effects in overall health and fitness with additional benefits that are more often or not, overlooked.

Yes, it’s true. A resistance training program builds strong muscle, but it also helps you burn fat. Here’s how it’s accomplished.

A more muscular body increases metabolism, which allows you to burn up a good amount of extra calories daily – even at rest.

That means whether I’m playing a video game, watching Family Guy, or even sleeping, I’m burning up unwanted calories!  I don’t know about you, but to me that’s pretty cool!

With weight lifting fitness, you also gain a good amount of energy. You’ll find yourself jumping from bed morning after morning, ready for the day and actually looking forward to it. You won’t even need a pot full of coffee.

By embarking on a well rounded program, you’ll actually loose the sluggish feelings and replace them with an energetic body that most everyone would love to have .

PSST! You’ll look hot and sexy too!  YUM!!!

The opposite sex will be looking your way and checking you out. Hope you are OK with that  ;)

If that isn’t enough for you, your mood will improve and you’ll have a great outlook on life in general. PLUS, your posture will be better, your blood pressure lower, and you’ll even enjoy greater balance and coordination.

I mean, what’s not to like?

No, you don’t need to workout untill your muscles tear or explode.

No, your mantra dosn’t have to be “No pain, no gain!!!”

A weight lifting plan dosn’t need to be hard or difficult. Start with a weight you can handle and progress from there. Don’t do too much too soon and get your doctor’s advice before beginning any fitness plan.

Fitness Weight Benches That Save Space and Deliver a Full Workout

August 26th, 2010 at 02:01am Under Fitness Equipment

fitness-weight-benches

Fitness weight benches often take up a lot of space, which make living with them inconvenient if you don’t have the necessary room to fit it in.

If you have a small amount of square footage to work with  but still want the convenience and pleasure of working out  at home, there are many compact benches and systems on the market that are fitted to your specific needs.

When going out to buy  your new bench, give serious thought to it’s over all size and where you intend to place it within your workout area. It’s a good idea to be prepared for this by actually measuring  your space and  the equipment you intend to place, so be sure to take a tape measure as well as all measurements needed  with you when shopping.

Picture of a common measuring tape in inches. ...

There are many varieties of space saving fitness weight benches available to you.

Some are a scaled down version of a full size model, some are able to fold or break down for storage, while others are built from the ground up with the idea of saving space specifically in mind.

No matter which you decide on, make absolutely certain to check out the construction.

You don’t want to be in the middle of your workout and have the bench collapse because it was made poorly. Look for either single piece or solid welds at the stress points, excellent support all around, be sure it can hold at minimum, 300 pounds, and it should be comfortable with ample padding for your back, bottom. Legs, and arms too if you are buying a model with those attachments.

If you plan on lifting weights to develop your upper-body, a bench designed solely for sit-ups or crunches will not be in your best interest.  Keep in mind the more versatile the better. You want something that will allow you to do as many exercises possible, so you can change up your workout and not be limited in your choices.

Fitness weight benches that accommodate your workout routine should be the focus of your attention.

Fitness Center : Motovation and Fun = Results

August 19th, 2010 at 11:35pm Under Weights and Fitness

fitness-center

A fitness center is a great place to get motivated from fellow fitness enthusiasts, whilst also being able to take full advantage of the wide range of equipment and classes at the particular gym or health club that you go to.

There are now so many gyms and fitness clubs to choose from and all offer different services at different prices. So who should you sign up with?

Firstly you need to look at what exists in your local area. If you need to drive any further than 15 minutes or so to a gym, it is very likely that you will not go as often as you need to. If you live in a metropolitan area this will not be a problem as there are now multiple gyms in every single city.

LaFitness is one of the most well known and leading fitness centers in the US. They have many different locations around the country and have different activities for you to choose from. They are more than just a gym; LA Fitness provides basketball, swimming, indoor cycling and other sporting facilities so you can have an all round workout whilst never getting bored of doing the same gym routine.

LA Fitness clubs are also equipped with state of the art cardio and free weights equipment for those who prefer a traditional gym environment.
I could not locate any pricing plans on the LA Fitness website which is always alarming, but they are a very well known brand and as such can be trusted. Call your local LAFitness fitness center to find out which pricing plans they have available.

Another excellent fitness center is BallyFitness. They currently have a $0 enrollment fee and plans from just $29.99 per month. This is one of the most affordable fitness clubs around. The great thing about BallyFitness is that there is no long term contract so you aren’t obliged to keep paying if you don’t want to. They have several membership levels; with the Comprehensive plan being especially enticing as you get personal training included.

These are just two of the many fitness centre choices you have – so do your homework and then get signed up!

3 Health and Fitness Tips

August 13th, 2010 at 10:01pm Under Uncategorized

health-and-fitness

There are many helpful fitness tips floating around out there but even with this plethora of useful information freely available so many people are still ignoring the needs of their health. It is easy to be lazy and continually put off fitness until tomorrow, but what do you really achieve by doing that? From now your goal should be to make that ‘tomorrow’ start today!

These 3 health and fitness tips will get you motivated so that you can start exercising right away. With that said, starting something is one thing; actually continuing it for the long term is something else altogether. I will cover both of these issues here rather than focusing on the technical and specific exercises that you should do – you should know what types of exercises are good for you as there is plenty of free information available on that topic.

1. Do It Early
It is surprising how easy it is to put something off when you think about it all day long. If you plan to exercise in the evening then your day might be filled with negative thoughts about it, or coming up with excuses of why you can’t do it.
Don’t give your mind time to think up stories: exercise first thing in the morning and then feel good for the rest of the day knowing you have made progress.

2. Grab a Friend
Having someone to work out with you provide so much extra incentive. If you are feeling lazy, then your friend can be there to motivate you to get moving. You can also compare progress and even display some competitive spirit to push each other to the next level.

3. Don’t Make It Difficult
Starting exercise is only as difficult and dreadful as you make it be and surprisingly enough for some, it really is all in your mind.
If you tell yourself enough times that you are tired, then you will feel tired. If you continually tell yourself that you feel great then you will feel energized and ready for fitness. It is all mind over matter when it comes to getting off that couch and into your gym clothes.

These 3 quick health and fitness tips will help your mind to become accustomed to not only starting your exercise regime each day, but also sticking to it for many years to come.

August 10th, 2010 at 08:15pm Under Health+ Weight Loss+ fitness

lose-weight-fitness

Forget fad diets and beat the yo-yo effect. If you really want to loose weight, fitness programs will have a lasting effect on your body as well as your emotional levels. You will find that you don’t feel deprived in any way and you’ll start making smarter choices in your diet.

A good fitness program will also give you tons of energy, you’ll be more active, have more fun and enjoy life with a new zest and flavor.

But before we can begin, there are some things we need to answer.

You want to lose weight, fitness is the answer that will have a lasting effect but  finding the best program for our individual needs can be difficult. Choosing a program from all that’s out there can seem daunting.

We’ll start by considering the answers to some simple questions.

Is the plan I have in mind user friendly? In other words will it be something you will be able to use and follow?

So many programs and diets out there today assume that you went to medical school and are written to be understood by a doctor. Following along in these plans is hard and makes us discouraged when we fail. We want to lose weight, our fitness program needs to be simple and doable.

How does this program fit into your lifestyle? Do you have time to go to the gym or work out at home every day, or would you prefer something with less sessions but a higher intensity? Make sure that you can fit it in your routine and dont’ do too much too soon. Start slowly and build on your successes. Don’t be afraid to change routines if you find it’s not what you enjoy.

Will this plan help you loose weight? Certain fitness programs are meant to build your body instead of focusing on weight loss or an overall toned and tight look. Look into programs that have your goal in mind. We want to look good, not like the Hulk.

If you answer these questions, you’ll come up with a plan that you enjoy and  fits your specific needs. So if you want to really lose weight, fitness plans will help you do it quickly and with lasting results.

The Benefits of Weights and Fitness

August 7th, 2010 at 07:31pm Under Weights and Fitness

weights-and-fitness

Did you know that lifting weights regularly can assist your bone strength, help with weight loss and make you a fitter, stronger person?

So many people, particularly women, write off strength training as the domain of bodybuilders or people who want to  ‘bulk up’  but you don’t have to desire to be a muscly person in order to benefit from weight training. Weights and fitness routines can assist with a plethora of health aspects including chronic health conditions like arthritis, and even injury recovery.  By building lean muscle mass you are strengthening your body, and that can only be a good thing.

Strength training with a weights and fitness program will also keep you mentally fit. You will become a more confident person and you’ll have a good body image. This is highly important and is a central part of who you are as a person: you will notice your confidence soaring after you start weight training AND the best part is that it doesn’t take long to see results.

Training with weights can be as simple as doing 5 sets of dumbbell curls every couple of days. Dumbbells are very cheap to buy and can be used anywhere in the home. there are some great videos online that show you exactly how to do various weights exercises, and it’s always important to follow good form so that you don’t injure yourself. Starting with lighter weights will allow you to develop the correct technique when you lift weights.

Other strength training exercises include those with a barbell such as curls and lifts. You can work out your legs with a barbell, just ensure you keep a good back posture and never lift weights beyond your means.

To get the most out of weights training your body must rest enough to recover: usually two to three days after exercising a particular muscle group.

If you want to raise your self esteem, improve your strength, tone your body and simply become fitter then undertake a weights and fitness program. You will be amazed at the results and at the same time your body will feel better, look better and function better forever.

Should You Join a Fitness Club?

August 4th, 2010 at 06:47pm Under Weights and Fitness

fitness-club

Let’s get straight to the point: fitness clubs are quickly gaining bad reputations when it comes to customer management. Some, not all, have fallen into practices of hiding sign up terms and contract agreements until the member has committed to an expensive fitness plan or gym membership. There is only one way to avoid that happening to you: read the fine print and have a total understanding to what you are committed to before signing on the dotted line.

Now that’s out of the way, and assuming you are going to choose a well known and trusted fitness club, we can start looking at the benefits of using such a facility.

A fitness club is similar to a gym but often there is more interaction between you and staff members. Whilst gyms sometimes have classes for you to attend, fitness clubs may take this to a whole new level with personalized options. You will also find a greater number of facilities at a fitness club compared with a gym, such as sporting courts, swimming pools and other all over fitness areas.

The main benefit of course to attending a fitness or health club is the fact that you can access a whole range of equipment and facilities in one place that would otherwise cost much more to use. You can literally stay a whole day in a large club. You can use the gym in the morning, go for a leisurely swim to cool down, and then have a game of tennis afterwards.

Motivation
A common reason that people join fitness clubs is to surround themself with people who are working out and becoming healthier. It is a fact that you will become more motivated about exercising and pushing yourself harder if those around you are doing the same thing. When you are at a health club and everyone there is involved in some form of fitness activity, you can’t help to want to join in regardless of how much you didn’t feel like it before you arrived!

Joining the right fitness club is a step in the right direction for your health, and it won’t take long until you feel like a whole new person.

Body Fitness: Bodybuilding Basics for Beginners

August 1st, 2010 at 06:21pm Under fitness

body-fitness

Believe it or not, bodybuilding is for everyone. You don’t need to have great aspirations to gain muscle ripping biceps in order to experience benefits from lifting weights. Strength training holds so many health and fitness benefits but unfortunately many people simply overlook it. A high percentage of people, particularly those who wish to lose weight, by pass the strength training equipment at the gym in favor of the treadmill and aerobics classes. Whilst these forms of cardio fitness are important, body fitness using weights is just as important, if not more so; regardless of your goals.

Here are some quick body fitness tips for people who are new to bodybuilding:

1. Vary Your Workouts
You will notice fast results when you start lifting weights, but this drops off after a few months as your body becomes accustomed to the routine. That is why mixing up your workouts is vital. You can try isolation exercises, compound exercises, different repetition routines, pyramid workouts and many others.

2. Allow Recovery Time
Recovery time is just as important as time in the gym. It is during recovery that your muscles repair and grow. Therefore you must give them ample time to undertake this process. Generally you will aim to work each muscle group twice per week so there is about three days of repair time between each workout.

3. Eat For Fitness
What you eat is going to determine your results. If you workout well, but eat badly then you are just wasting your time and energy. Your diet must complement your fitness routine. It should be high in protein and complex carbohydrates, but low in simple carbohydrates, fats, sugars and salt.

Body fitness should be a part of your workout routine at least twice per week. Unlike cardio exercise which can take some time to reveal benefits and changes within your body, working out with weights takes effect much quicker and with more pronounced results. You can lose weight faster by doing strength training, and you can also gain a toned muscled physique by continually altering and progressing your body fitness workout routine

Fitness weight machines offer people that want to stay in shape and have optimal fitness levels a convenient and quick way of doing so.

It’s no wonder the fitness industry is in such good shape. They provide countless opportunities and items for us to buy. And buy we do.

We make an investment in our health through gyms, health clubs, and exercise equipment. And why not? After all, these machines are able to help us live longer and fuller lives.

As the years go by, exercise and fitness programs gain more and more popularity. Every year, gyms enjoy an increase of membership in January and early February than all the rest of the months combined. And it’s due to the fact that we all want to take better care of our bodies, and that’s a good thing.

Although we want to get fit, being human, we want do it conveniently. We can’t help it. The path of least resistance is hardwired into our make up.

This is the exact reason that fitness weight machines have always been popular.  Such machines are bought for home use or used in the various fitness clubs, making them available to practically everyone.

Although machines put to use in health clubs or gyms are meant for commercial use, less pricey and more compact versions  are able to be bought by consumers everywhere. Plus, such exercise equipment is very good at producing results when placed side by side other plans in comparison.

Provided you use these fitness weight machines the correct way, you’ll be able to burn a bunch of calories while working out. Paving the way to a leaner, more toned and defined body far faster than with cardio routines alone.

But all work and no play make Paul a bad boy. I start getting into trouble – the fun kind. So I try to incorporate  as much fun into my workouts as possible. Currently, my all time favorite fitness weight machine is my Wii Fit.

A fitness weight bench is meant to offer support when working to build and sculpt the muscle groups of the upper body, the lower body, and the torso, or core.

Body Weight Fitness – Great Workout, No Equipment Necessary

July 11th, 2010 at 01:21pm Under Fitness Equipment+ Weights and Fitness

body-weight-fitness

Body weight fitness is all about doing – getting our body moving and exercising using the resistance provided by our own bodies. No equipment is necessary, nor is an expensive gym or health club membership required. In fact, you do not need to spend a single penny.

The only this that is required is a commitment to yourself and your health. It could even be as little as eight to ten minutes a day!

There are many ways to get exercising using your body alone, Yoga and Pilates, as well as simple push-ups and sit-ups come to mind when I think of these exercises. There are many more.

Such workouts allow

you to exercise no matter where you happen

to be or even if time is at a minimal.

Uploaded by: Frank C.
Image via Creative Commons Share Alike License

Don’t believe me? Drop down and pump out a quick fifty push-ups. How do you feel afterward?

Body weight fitness works, plain and simple. This exercise method can strengthen, and tone your body and even help in your flexibility.

This is also the method of exercise I use most since it is very difficult to hurt yourself doing it.

Because I have Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, both my doctor and Sensei (martial arts instructor) do not want me to lift heavy weights.

I have achieved very strong, flexible muscles geared to martial arts through Yoga, Pilates, and cardio exercises.

Weights are not needed for a good exercise program and of course there isn’t a perfect program for everyone. It all depends on what you want to accomplish and what you enjoy. Because, after all, if we don’t enjoy it, we probably won’t keep doing it.

If you don’t like to go to a gym and have to wait for a machine or work station to be available, or if you don’t have much room to exercise to begin with, or if money is tight, give body weight fitness a try. You’ll be glad you did.

2 Benefits of Free Weights Fitness

July 8th, 2010 at 01:02pm Under Weights and Fitness

free-weights-fitness

It is an age old topic of conversation at gyms all around the world: are free weights better than machine weights?
People have been lifting heavy objects for fitness for centuries, but it is only comparatively recently that we have been given the ‘luxury’ of gym equipment that makes it a little easier for anyone to get into weight lifting. But don’t be fooled: these machines can be set up to be just as difficult as free weights, if not more so. But hardcore gym enthusiasts will always tout the benefits of free weights fitness over weights machines. Let’s look at why this is so.

1. No Help
Weights machines will always provide some assistance to you when working out, usually in the form of getting back into position after a rep. With free weights this does not occur so your muscles must complete both cycles of each repetition fully. In short, free weights engage your muscles in full. You will achieve natural movement patterns with free weights and you will also have to balance solely on your own.

2. Versatility
Gym machines generally have one purpose and one purpose only; that is the exercise they were designed to accommodate. But if you pick up a pair of dumbbells there are literally dozens of exercises you can accomplish. This versatility has made dumbbells and barbells common home gym accessories. They are also much cheaper (and smaller) than your average weights machine.

These 2 main benefits of free weights fitness are why serious bodybuilders rarely use machines. There are also some benefits to machines, such as forcing you to use good form in order to complete the exercise, but you can achieve this with free weights with practice and continued strength training.

So when should you use machine weights instead of free weights?
People who are suffering from injury or have balance problems can benefit from machine weights. Starting slowly on machines and then working your way to light free weights is an ideal plan.

I highly recommend you incorporate free weight training into your routine to find out what difference it makes to your body.

Is Weight Training Fitness Right for You?

July 2nd, 2010 at 11:42am Under Weights and Fitness

weight-training-fitness

Weight training fitness develops muscles and builds strength, it’s a great exercise. In fact, a good number of gyms specialize in it.

Recently however, more options have been made available. So, is lifting weights right for you?

Resistance Training – training that enlists the aid of devices or weights in order to increase the workload of the muscles being trained, is among the most popular methods available to us in our hunt to improve our bodies and overall fitness level.

A complete weight training workout can be perf...
Image via Wikipedia

It keeps our coordination, endurance,  and muscles strong. It even wards off osteoporosis by increasing our bone density.

When done correctly, weight fitness training can bring very impressive results. It doesn’t take very long to do and it isn’t as difficult as you may imagine and everyone can do it at various intensities

However, activities that are more aerobic in nature do have some distinct advantages.

For starters, you are able to do such exercises practically anywhere you happen to be with next to no equipment, if any at all. Really, all you might need is a good pair of shoes. And that’s if you decide to have your workout outdoors!

As far as weight training fitness goes, there is an endless supply of equipment you have at your disposal, not all of which are heavy weights.

One of my favorite  pieces resistance training equipment is the resistance band. It’s compact, versatile, and gives a great workout.

It’s nothing more than rubber tubing with handles at both ends. You can get them at any fitness store, they come in different levels of resistance.

The key to weight or resistance training is to concentrate on your form as you isolate specific  groups of muscles and increase the level of resistance as you gain strength.

more weight, or resistance in the case of the exercise band, and less reps will give your muscles a good bulk. Whereas less resistance or weight and more reps will give your muscles a toned look and increases endurance.

When working out, you will need to employ both methods. First building, than toning. That will allow you to sculpt your body exactly the way you want it .

With weight training fitness, you will be able to sculpt your body in a small frame of time with lasting results if kept up on a regular schedule.

Fitness Gear: Weight Training Equipment

June 23rd, 2010 at 09:32am Under Weights and Fitness

fitness-gear-weight

Weight training is a form of fitness that should not just be considered the domain of bodybuilders. Absolutely everyone can benefit from lifting weights and doing resistance training.

If you are a woman and have been afraid to do weights training as you fear bulking up like a man, don’t worry. Women are unable to build muscle like men do and whilst you will find your muscles becoming toned, you will never become ‘manly’ looking without some serious supplementation.

When you are looking at fitness gear and weight training equipment you’ll notice how affordable it is to set up a small home gym area

Some of the items you might consider buying for the home include:

- Dumbbells
- Barbells
- Bench
- Weights machines

Barbells and Dumbbells are highly versatile pieces of equipment. They are also the most affordable strength training items you will buy as compared with weight machines they are very low priced.

You can then buy extra weights for them as you become stronger and feel comfortable lifting more.

Weights machines can range from the cheap up to the very expensive gym-quality models. You will notice a vast difference in the look, feel and movement of the more expensive systems, but usually mid-range option is suitable for home use.

You will find weights machines that focus on particular muscles, or machines that provide an all over body workout. The multi machines can cost anywhere from $1000 right up to $5000 and beyond.

If you just want to tone up without spending a fortune then the best fitness gear for weight training to buy is simply a set of dumbbells with adjustable weights. Your can work your arms and legs with this simple equipment thorough a variety of exercises and workout routines.

The Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells are a good quality set that are durable. They are not the cheapest dumbbells available but they are well worth paying a little extra for. The Bowflex Dumbbells lets you adjust weights in 2.5 lb increments so it is very easy to gradually increase your strength.

Fitness gear and weight training equipment can transform your body without sending you broke.

Fitness Centers : Access to Thousands of Dollars of Equipment

June 20th, 2010 at 07:56am Under Weights and Fitness

fitness-centers

Do you want to work out regularly but can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on home gym equipment? Or do you simply prefer working out with and around people who have the same goals and enthusiasm as you do?
If you fit into either of the above scenarios then fitness centers are for you.

Every major city and town is now equipped with at least one fitness center, but most will have dozens of options. Most major cities will even have multiple venues of the same fitness chain so that there is always somewhere close to home for you to attend to complete your exercise and fitness regime.

A fitness center is also known as a gym or a health club. Whilst there can be some differences, most if not all will contain rooms with cardio training equipment and weight equipment. Some will have a pool and spa and others will have sporting facilities like tennis and basketball courts. Many clubs also now offer classes such as aerobics, water aerobics, Pilates, yoga and much more.

Gold’s Gym is by far the most well known gym in the USA, being the old training ground of champions like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Gold’s is now spread all over the United States and provides many facilities for fitness buffs.

A new trend is the women only gym such as Curves which provides a relaxing, motivating environment for women to exercise. There are also several other chains of women only gyms which are highly popular.

Fitness centers like the ones mentioned above hold so many benefits. They are cheaper than buying home gym equipment, they allow you to socialize, you can join in classes and learn something new, you benefit by being able to talk to experts, you can take up personal training or have a personal fitness plan made for you and above all, you can use the huge range of equipment and facilities for just a small monthly fee.

It really is little wonder that fitness centers are seeing their biggest attendance numbers ever and it just continues to grow as more and more people become enthusiastic about exercising in a supportive environment.

How a Personal Fitness Trainer Can Help You

June 14th, 2010 at 05:23am Under fitness

fitness-trainer

Do you struggle to motivate yourself to exercise?
Or have you hit a plateau and are not sure what to do next to reach your fitness goals?

A personal fitness trainer is able to devise a customized plan for your fitness that suits your body type, fitness level, weight and goals.
Whilst visiting a gym class is useful, there really is no greater benefit to having your very own professional trainer who is an expert in health and fitness to work out a personalized plan just for you.

You always hear about famous people having fitness trainers; could this be the reason that so many of them look great? After all, how much does the average person really know about fitness? We know that doing exercise helps, but perhaps there are better ways to reach the goals we want. A fitness trainer can help you with this and more including diet tips.

The first thing a personal trainer will do is evaluate your current fitness level, your health, your diet and he or she will ask what your ultimate goal is. If you are focusing on weight loss he can make a plan that results in fast weight loss. But if you want to tone up and become more muscly, a custom exercise and health plan will be formulated for you to result in muscle growth.

Personal trainers charge varying amounts for their services. The most well known trainers may charge several hundreds dollars for a session, but lesser known but highly professional fitness trainers will be more affordable and no less effective. You will find a plethora of trainer advertisements in your newspaper, online and at your local gym.

The best thing about fitness training with a coach is tracking of your progress. He will be able to keep a record of everything you do and the results that occur over time. He can then refine the plan if need be, or teach you new routines that will improve your fitness.

A fitness trainer is highly beneficial for anyone regardless of what shape you are in now or what your ultimate health goals are.

Fitness: Sports That Are Fun and Healthy

June 5th, 2010 at 03:11am Under fitness

fitness-sports

Do you dread the thought of exercising?

For many people visiting the gym is more a chore than a pleasure. It might feel like something you HAVE to do rather than something you WANT to do. If you have that outlook then eventually you may just give up on going to the gym altogether.

Then there are the people who think that you can only become fit by running 5 miles everyday. Not everybody likes to run (I can’t blame you!) and running can also cause you serious injuries.

There are many fitness alternatives and the best ones are those that involve high fitness sports. There are so many sports that are great for a workout and for improving your health and fitness, but you don’t even need to be good at them to benefit.

So what are the very best fitness sports? I’ve compiled a short list of the sports that I believe provide exceptional fitness benefits and I’ve explained why each one is so good.

Swimming
Swimming does amazing things for your upper body. It strengthens your arms, back and shoulders and is a low impact exercise so is great for those with muscle or joint problems.

Tennis
Tennis is an all over body workout. Your arms are busy swinging the racquet whilst your legs are moving non stop. It is no wonder that tennis players are some of the fittest people on the planet.

Ice Skating
Ice skating is not only fun, but it teaches you balance and promotes leg and ankle strength.

Squash
Squash requires quick reflexes and constant movement so is a great cardiovascular activity.

Cycling
Riding a bike will have your legs hurting in minutes when you aren’t used to it, so gradually ease into it. Try riding uphill for extra b

enefits.

Kayaking/Canoeing
Th

ere may be no better upper body exercise than rowing a boat,

which explains the muscles on Olympic kayakers.

Surfing/Bodyboarding
The balance required for these beach sports is astounding, and it’s a great mental exercise too. It also requires all over body

strength to stay standing and to paddle on to a wave.

These are just a small selection of the sports that will significantly improve your fitness whilst allowing you to have fun at the same time!

Fitness Equipment : What Should You Buy?

June 5th, 2010 at 03:11am Under Fitness Equipment

fitness-equipment

A good piece of fitness equipment can transform your body in a matter of just a few months.
But what equipment should you buy for the home that is neither too large nor expensive, but provides you with the workouts you need to tone your body and hone your fitness? Well, as you know there are literally hundreds of options for home gym equipment so I am going to talk about some specific pieces of equipment in this article and tell you what they do. Your goals and budget will determine whether one or more of them are suitable for you.

Rowing Machines
These are machines that people don’t often consider first for their home gym but they are worth putting on your list. Rowing a boat is one of the best upper body exercises around and copying this in your home without getting wet means that your arms, shoulders and back will benefit. Lower body strength is also utilized with your legs required to push back when rowing.

Treadmills
The most popular home gym item is the treadmill. These days they are all electronic and provide many features such as uphill climbing which significantly increase the effectiveness of your workout and results you’ll get. The great thing about treadmills compared to outdoor running is that there is usually some cushioning when you land so you are not risking knee, ankle and shin injuries.

Exercise Bikes
For cardio work, cycling works wonders. The exercise bikes are generally more comfortable than a regular bike and let you exercise inside when the weather isn’t right.

Elliptical Trainers
If you have knee problems then you’ll enjoy an elliptical trainer and although they may seem awkward at first, you feel like you’re walking on air when you get the hang of it.

Dumbbells
Whilst not strictly considered ‘fitness equipment’, dumbbells are so versatile that they provide a surprising amount of possible exercises. You can work your arms, back, mid section, legs and more using dumbbells with varying weights. They are also the cheapest home gym equipment.

It is worth paying more for quality fitness equipment rather than choosing the cheapest ones. Cheap equipment may work well for a while, but over time it wears out significantly faster than good brand models. In addition, quality equipment will provide smoother action and a general sturdier feel.

Exercise Fitness Basics

June 2nd, 2010 at 02:29am Under fitness

exercise-fitness-basics

We all know that exercise and fitness is vital for good health, but how much do you know about the basics?
The more you know the better you can become at using exercise and fitness to improve your health, resistance to disease and even lengthen your life expectancy.

There are several parts to physical fitness. These include:

- Cardiovascular fitness
- Muscular strength
- Muscular endurance
- Flexibility

These 4 fitness basics should all be concentrated on as part of your overall health plan. Let’s look at them in some more detail.

Cardiovascular Fitness
This sort of fitness is all about the ability for your body to deliver oxygen to your muscles, plus the quality of your heart and lung functions.

Muscular Strength
Muscle strength is about how much force your muscle can exert in short bursts. This is achieved through weight lifting.

Muscular Endurance
How well your muscles and entire body can sustain continual force is a measure of muscular endurance.

Flexibility
Moving your joints and muscles through their full motion range measures your flexibility. One of the most common flexibility tests is the simple ‘touch your toes’ examination.

Fat vs. Muscle
Refining your muscle to fat ratio is the goal of a fitness plan. Lean muscle mass is built through continual exercise and strength training and whilst you require some fat mass it should not be overwhelming factor. Certain types of exercise will assist you to decrease body fat, whilst others will help you to build muscle mass.

Warming Up
Your workout schedule should always consist of warm up exercises for at least 5 minutes. There are various ways to warm up including walking, slow jogging, stretching, arm rotations and other low intensity movements that stimulate muscle use without straining.

You should aim to do exercises from each of the 4 groups above on a weekly basis. Flexibility can be achieved through yoga exercises or even during warm ups. Muscular endurance can consist of sit-ups and pull-ups. Muscle strength exercises concern weight lifting and your cardiovascular fitness will be made up of running, aerobics and other continuous exercises.

These exercise fitness work out basics apply to every single person, whether you are someone wanting to lose weight or a person who plays professional sports.

Fitness books provide a guide and education for those wanting to delve a little deeper into their own health and fitness.
There are now so many fitness books and magazines available, so how do you know which ones to read?

When looking for quality fitness books, and short of buying the whole store out, always look at the credentials of the author. The best books are those written by coaches, professional athletes, scientists, nutritionists and military personnel. These people really know their stuff when it comes to fitness and you can learn a lot from them.

I am going to list just three of the best fitness books I have read lately. They are all very affordable – a couple are just $10 – and easy to read in just a few days.

101 Workouts for Women: Everything You Need to Get a Lean, Strong and Fit Physique
This book costs around $10 at Amazon.com and is packed full of solid information. It is published by Muscle and Fitness HERS magazine which is a wonderful magazine for all over fitness and health advice. The book contains some great fitness routines with great photos and clear instructions.

Fitness & Health
This book costs under $20 and is the sixth edition. It goes in depth on understanding the relationship between exercise and health. It focuses on aerobic fitness, muscular fitness, weight control, energy and much more. This is an all round book that is suited to people who want to learn more about the ‘how and why’ of fitness and health. However it also contains a lot of practical information with photos demonstrating exercises, plus calorie food listings.

The U.S. Navy SEAL Guide to Fitness and Nutrition
Don’t let the title scare you: this book is for everyone. For just $10 you get to read the material that was developed for Navy SEAL trainees. It talks about extreme conditions and preparing yourself for them, but the information is practical for everyday uses.

These three fitness books provide an excellent starting point for your health and fitness education and you won’t have to break the bank to own them.
